COMPOST CORNER, PHANTOM FLAN FLINGER, FLAN YOUR FOLKS, THE CAGE...ITV1 BRINGS YOU TISWAS REUNITED For one night only, ITV1 brings you TISWAS REUNITED, a one-off special reuniting the stars of the iconic groundbreaking children's show Tiswas. With a wealth of clips and reminiscences from the many stars who appeared on the series, the team will recreate the chaos and mayhem of those heady days of the show that broke the mould. Tiswas Reunited is new and exclusive to ITV1, June 2007.

TISWAS REUNITED will be the biggest, noisiest, messiest most colourful show television has seen for quite some time and the original team of regulars will all be there: CHRIS TARRANT, SALLY JAMES, LENNY HENRY, BOB CAROLGEES AND JOHN GORMAN.

Additionally, there will be lots of other familiar Tiswas faces in the audience. Many celebrities who took part in the show and were a part of the show's success will be there with their personal memories of Tiswas, and many more will be interviewed on location.

The list of guests who appeared on Tiswas reads like a 'Who's Who' of showbusiness, as it was always considered to be the coolest series and the show to be seen on.

TISWAS REUNITED is a celebration of the first, the most anarchic and the most groundbreaking Saturday morning kids' series in British television history.

Tiswas reunion got me smiling

16 June 2007

GETTING a flan in the face has made Chris Tarrant smile again after a “painful” year.

The TV host will be back tonight with the gang from Tiswas — in a special celebration to mark 25 years since the end of the anarchic Saturday morning show.

In the past year, Chris has gone through a devastating divorce from wife Ingrid, 52, after admitting adultery.

Then, he was arrested and cautioned last month for a bizarre cutlery- throwing incident at an Indian restaurant in Nottingham.

Speaking about the split from Ingrid — the mother of two of his children, Samantha, 18, and Toby, 14 — Chris said his heavy workload had helped him through some dark days.

He says: “The Tiswas reunion was not a turning point but it does prove I’m very much alive and very much getting on with life — and having fun.

“People expect me to be battered, but I’m not battered at all.

“Of course, I went through a very painful period and I inflicted a lot of pain on people around me. But me as me is still pretty full on.

“It has not been my best year, no. It has been a sad, sad year for everyone involved. But I’m trying to move on.

“I’m trying to re-establish my relationship with my children.

“There were the constant headlines and a lot of extraordinary nonsense. I was named with a string of blondes. I thought, ‘Where do I get the time?’

“Then there was this absurd spoon throwing incident. You think, ‘How can this be front page news?’ Never mind Iraq, Tarrant in spoon rage!”

He creases up with laughter and says: “Nottingham has the highest gun-crime rate in Europe, plus one spoon incident.”

Ever the professional, Chris refused to back out from the satirical BBC quiz Have I Got News For You just days after his arrest.

He explains: “I thought, ‘Sod it, I’ll do it and take it on the chin’. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m a big boy and I can handle it.”

Chris admits there were days he could have happily disappeared to spend his life “quietly fishing”. But his focus to get him through his troubles has been his love of work.

The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host admits: “There is now a whole generation of people who have grown up just thinking I’m that man who wears a very sensible suit and tie. But I’m as barmy as ever, I’m quite mad — all my mates know that.”

Complete with gingery ‘lamb chop’ sideburns, blond locks and embarrassing flares, Chris, now 60, was the star of the Saturday morning kids’ show.

When asked how weird it is to see himself back in his late 20s, Chris admits: “I can’t believe the sideburns, they were cringeworthy.

“When I watched the tapes, I thought, ‘What was my mind doing?’ Some stuff was so off the wall.”

“But I love what I do — and to do Tiswas again was a delight.”

Chris signed for the reunion after ITV chiefs approached him last year.

But as he prepared for the show — with Sally James, Lenny Henry, John Gorman, Bob Carolgees and even Spit the Dog — he became less keen.

He explains: “My thinking was that everybody remembers Tiswas with great enthusiasm through rose-tinted glasses. Perhaps it would better to leave people with great memories.”

He signed up only if he could produce the programme and he insisted all four co-stars MUST be on board.

Chris says: “If anyone had said ‘No’ we were not going to do it. So I spent a very funny day on the phone calling them. They all had concerns but I said it’d be an absolute hoot.”

The gang met two weeks ago for a photoshoot and Chris says: “It was a riot. Grown men and women were crying with laughter, just howling.

“Lenny and I got the giggles about the famous baby juggling and all the complaints.

“Then Sally said, ‘Never mind about that, do you remember the day you tried to wash a mouse live on the show?’. We just remembered all these crazy things.”

Chris concludes: “People have analysed Tiswas, even done university dissertations. But it’s not complicated — just blokes and one girl being silly.

“And we’ve all agreed to do a 50th anniversary show in 2032.”
